The Day The Music Died

“… and they’ll be singing… my my Miss American Pie, drove my Chevy to the levy but the levy was dry…”

Isn’t it funny that you only realise how much something is an integral part of your life when it’s gone?

Suffice to say that my trusty iPod has been my constant companion in most activities of my life. The moment I step out of the house to take bus or MRT, it’s playing until I reach my destination. I listen to it while at work, I listen to it while driving, walking, talking, reading, speeding, moving, schmoozing…. well, I exaggerate, but you get the idea.

So it was with considerable horror that I broke my earphones last Sunday. Suddenly the music died, and I was overcome with discomfort. Well as they say, desperate times need desperate measures; so I went to Mustafa with Kheva at 1am on Monday night.

Picked up a new pair of earphones (and a SPARE pair as backup, can never be too careful now), and all was well. 🙂

Yellow = spoilt! Blue = NEW! (pardon the spaghetti of wires)

Holy Leaping Years, Batman!

Well, I can’t resist a quick post on this day, 29th Feb 2008.

erm… obviously because this day comes around once in 4 years.

I’ve been pretty busy adjusting to my new job, and this week I’ve been under the weather. *achoo!*

Hope this blog will still be going when 29th Feb 2012 comes round. 😉

Finally… My Clean Desk

I finally managed to tidy up my desk enough to post a pic of it. 🙂

Some people have been wondering what my collection of Mac stuff looks like, so here it is.

Grocery Shopping on CNY eve

Went to Giant Hypermart at IMM to pickup some last minutes groceries with mum just now. We got a couple of these lovely chinese wong bok cabbages.

But the queue to pay was insane. There were 18 cashier counters open, almost the full capacity. And some counters even had 2 cash registers and 2 cashiers. Which means I’d hazzard a guess that there were well over 20 cashiers working.

But this was the scene of the queue to my left.

And this was the queue to my right.

I ended up waiting for about 30 min till it was my turn to check out.

Ouch. Ouch. Ouch.

Moving On…

It’s been 3 years in Reuters and I think it’s time to move on.

3 hard and tough years which have seen more overtime than I care to imagine and more hair-loss inducing stress than I care to remember. However, for every tail on a coin, there’s a head. I’ve met some pretty gosh darn amazing people in my time in Reuters; iBon in my first stint in 2005, to Kheva and Ambrose in my second stint from 2006 to 2008. My life is richer from meeting you, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

So today being my last day in Reuters before moving on to my new job at UOB, I popped over to Ambrose’s seat to sign his “Reuters ORD Alumni” whiteboard.

“Arrive, Raise Hell, Leave” Somebody give me a Hell Yeah!

Nothing much more to say really. ORD LOHHH!!

Looking forward to the next challenge. 🙂

My Favourite?

I have to say I hardly ever find my name on a menu. Ok, try…. never.

So it was with quite a considerable bit of surprise that I spotted a dish named after me, while having dinner with iBon at NYDC this evening.

Apparently, my favourite dessert is a Pineapple Carrot Cake. Well, I’m not exactly a huge fan of carrot cakes, but what the hey, it’s got my name on it. I definitely had to try it!

I’d have to say it was pleasantly nice. The carrot cake was warm, and had nice, fairly coarse carrot strips in it. Far too often, carrot cakes have carrot so finely shredded that one can hardly see any evidence of carrot at all. Paired with a nutty medley of Vanilla ice cream and pistachio with almond slices, it made a pretty nifty dessert.

And the REAL reason we were at NYDC? To grab a bite of the mythical Ugly Cake.

Isn’t that a face cake only a mother could love? 🙂 But for sure, it tastes much better than it looks.

Here’s To The Crazy Ones

Not much to say about this except it’s one of my favourite Apple ads.

Grand Old Lady

I came across these pics while uploading some photos from my camera onto my Mac.

9 November 2007. National Stadium. The Grand Old Lady.

East Entrance, 7:30pm, it was a cool and breezy night. The perfect weather for football.

The Lions had made it to the last round of the qualifiying stages for the World Cup 2010 Finals Asia Zone Group Table. Kheva and me had made the trip down to the National Stadium to watch them take on Tajikistan.

For me it was something of a spiritual return to the place which had held so many good memories. Milling around the East Entrance, nothing much had changed since 1994. 14 years ago, I had followed the exploits of our beloved Lions (Fandi, Sundram, Lim Tong Hai, Jang Jung, Abbas Saad, Alistair Edwards and gang) in the M League and M Cup. Back then, before the inception of our S League, we mixed it up with our arch-rivals from across the Causeway. We played in the Malaysian League. And we won the double that year in 1994. And I attended every single home game at the National Stadium that year.

Well, one thing HAD changed. I bought a bottle of mineral water, and was promptly told by the vendor that “now cannot bring plastic bottle into stadium. cannot. cannot.”. So, I had to take it in a plastic bag. Weak!

I guess it was done to prevent the crowd from having missiles to throw. But hey, the way I see it, if I really wanted to find something to throw, I can always throw my shoes or slippers. I certainly remember having many handy things to throw in 1994. The mandatory match-day New Paper, and the killer National Stadium Indian curry puff. Ahhh… those were the days…

After ascending the short flight of steps leading into the stadium itself, the memories came flooding back. The seats were still as old, and still as deadly on the bum. You could easily get a few splinters from the old wood. Unforgettable. 🙂

The match went well, considering Tajikistan were something of an unknown quantity to us. But we eventually prevailed with a brace of goals from newly-minted Singaporean citizen, Alexander Duric.

With the match won at 2-0, the Lions did us proud in the return leg in Dushanbe, Tajikistan where they held the Tajiks to a 1-1 draw.

Strangely, the National Stadium had been “officially” closed down, and scheduled to be torn down after the curtain-closing match between Singapore and the Socceroos of Australia couple of months earlier. I guess no one in the FAS believed that we would make it past Tajikistan and into the group stages, because last I read, the National Stadium will host ONE LAST HOME MATCH when the Lions host Lebanon on 26 March 2008.

You can be sure, I’ll try my best to be at that final, last hurrah for the Grand Old Lady.

Farewell 2007

As is customary of how I spend my New Year’s Eves, I’m at home kicking back and reflecting on the year past. Suffice to say that 2007 has been trying and extremely challenging. To all my friends and loved ones who have stood by me when things seemed darkest, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. To those whom I have upset, pissed off, riled up, disappointed, I apologise. I have to say, many times I have deserved what I got.

At the end of the day, isn’t that life though? Here’s hoping for a good 2008, and I am constantly reminded that every step in life, I hope to learn more about myself, as well as those around me.

On a slightly different note, I was given a nice surprise by iBon after she came back from her trip to Japan to catch Luna Sea. It’s a killer cute Yoruichi keychain thingy. The thing is tiny, and cute as hell! Thanks Nee san! As usual, you ROCK! 🙂

Pint-sized but mighty!

Here’s the bigger version which I have had for some time now…

Legs that go on forever….

Babe, you are uber-hotness

So I’ve reached the last post for 2007. Here’s to many more good ones in 2008! 😀

Buggy’s Xmas Presents

It’s been an absolute age since my last post.

With 2008 almost upon us, I felt that a change in Basement theme is probably in order. So, out with the darkness, and in with the clean look. I think it makes for a nice, refreshing change. Kinda like swapping a char-grilled steak for a bowl of cucumber salad…. sort of…

Speaking of Xmas… I decided to treat myself to a nice Xmas gift this year. (ok, a couple of gifts)

For the longest time, I’ve been lusting after this beauty: The Apple 23 inch Cinema Display, and lo and behold… this morning the courier delivered my Xmas prezzie early… 🙂

Yesterday, I also picked up another long-time “must buy” target. A nifty pair of Harmon Kardon Soundsticks II. Swwweeettt….

I’m still busy clearing up my room and making space on my desk for my new toys… but suffice to say, I am a HAPPY CAMPER. Tidy room pics to follow once I finish my spring cleaning. Guess you could say I’m getting a leg-up on my Chinese New Year spring cleaning. 😉

Merry Christmas everyone!
